Bedok Town Centre in for makeover

by Romesh Navaratnarajah The mature town of Bedok is on track to be transformed into a new and exciting hub (pictured) for residents and patrons, according to Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for National Development and MP for East Coast GRC.

Together with Lim Swee Say, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, they officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony for a new hawker centre, town centre and multi-storey carpark yesterday.

The hawker centre cum multi-storey carpark is expected to be built next to the current hawker centre at Block 207 New Upper Changi Road. To be ready by 2014, the revamped facilities will provide diners with a more spacious and well-ventilated space.

As for the new multi-storey carpark, it will provide over 400 parking lots or an additional 100 to the existing one.

The housing board will also redevelop the site of the existing hawker centre into a new Heritage Corner and Town Plaza, set to be completed by mid-2015.

Meanwhile, Mr Lee noted that the HDB has taken measures to minimise the inconveniences of construction to residents.

"As we transform Bedok Town Centre (pictured) into a vibrant new hub, some of you may be concerned with the possible inconveniences. We seek your understanding and patience on these short-term inconveniences, so that we can all reap the longer term benefits of a revitalised Bedok Town Centre."

"We assure you that we will take all measures to minimise disturbances to you during the construction stage, wherever possible," he added.
