The defunct Tanjong Pagar Railway will open its doors to foodies again for two weeks, more than a year after its closure last June.
But instead of the Malay and Indian fare that the station’s canteen was known for, one will find sandwiches, espresso, and about 30 international and local art, design and culture magazines (Shopping Hour, Apartamento, The Design Society Journal etc) for browsing.
Called The U Café, this pop-up café is an initiative by Underscore, a local lifestyle magazine published by design studio Hjgher. Mr Justin Long, the studio’s creative director, says: “We want to create the ideal experience of having a range of curated, purposeful magazines along with food and drinks served from the heart.”
The magazine is working with The Plain, an existing cafe at Craig Road, to create a special menu for this event. The items will include Smoked Chicken Sandwich ($12), Lamb Cutlet ($12) and Greek Salad ($6).
The pop-up cafe, which will sit along the platform, is one of the four food stations — including Seng Choon Confectionery, Munch Munch and Popaganda — at Hermes’s The Gift of Time exhibition. It will be opened 11am to 9pm daily from 1st to 12th August.
