Kim Cattrall has landed a sexy new role.

The actress will star as faded movie star Alexandra del Lago in a theatre adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird Of Youth.

The play tells the story of gigolo and drifter Chance Wayne, who returns to his home town with faded film star Princess Kosmonopolis (also known as Alexandra Del Lago), who he hopes to use to help him break into movies.

The part, which was previously played by Dame Elizabeth Taylor in a 1989 TV adaptation, will mark Kim's debut on the stage at London's Old Vic theatre.

It sees Kim portray an even more predatory sexual character than the one she is best known for in Sex and the City.

Kim played Samantha Jones in the hit TV series from 1998 until 2004.

Since her appearance as Samantha, Kim has gone on to build a name for herself in the British theatre world. She appeared in Private Lives and recently completed a run in Antony and Cleopatra.

Sweet Birds of Youth will be part of Kevin Spacey’s final season as artistic director at the Old Vic theatre. The casting of Hollywood star Kim shows how Kevin has turned the theatre into a powerhouse venue during his tenure.
