31 July – Acclaimed Hong Kong comedy director Lee Lik-Chi has confirmed that he will be making a Malaysian film titled "Hua Xiao Hero" soon, with local veteran artist Auguste Kwan to star as the male lead in the film, according to Nan Yang.com.
Best known for his "Once Upon A Time A Hero In China" films, "God of Cookery" and "The King of Comedy" films starring former partner and comedy superstar Stephen Chow, the 51-year-old filmmaker will now blend his 'Mo Lei Tou' style that made Chow famous for the last three decades together with Malaysian humour in his new piece.
"There are times when people have a wrong perception on 'Mo Lei Tou'. 'Mo Lei Tou' is not just about making fun of the story but it has the ability to motivate and educate the audience on life matters from a different perspective. "Hua Xiao Hero" will feature a school setting as we are targeting younger audiences. School-related incidents are currently a hot topic, which is why I want to shoot a movie like that," said Lee, who will be returning to filmmaking after an 11-year absence.
"I really hope that I can combine Hong Kong and Malaysian culture creatively in my new film," he added.
Besides Auguste Kwan, the movie will also star local artists such as Loo Aye Keng, Steve Yap, Cindy, Baki Zainal, Ramasundran and Soo Wincci. A yet-to-be-named Hollywood action star will also be making an appearance.
When asked about his feelings on collaborating with Malaysian actors and actresses, Lee reveals that he is confident that they will be able to carry off his 'Mo Lei Tou' style.
"I'm not worry about their performances. They are all experienced actors and I believe we can work really well together," he said.
With a budget of RM2 million, "Hua Xiao Hero" will be shot entirely in Malaysia. Shooting is said to begin in one month's time.
