MBC ends labour strike

21 Jul – It was reported that MBC labour union has ended their 170-day strike, recorded as the longest strike in broadcasting history.

According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the decision was made during a union members' meeting at the MBC headquarters, Yeouido. It was decided that all MBC broadcasts will start returning to its normal schedule.

A representative of the union stated, "We will continue our efforts to unseat Kim Jae-chul in a different direction. The strike's end was a unanimous decision."

To recap, the strike began on 30 January 2012 by 770 workers as a protest towards MBC President Kim Jae-chul who allegedly distorted a news coverage. Calling him "a puppet of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak", the union's aim was to force Kim's resignation.

It was also revealed that with the strike over, MBC programmes such as "Infinity Challenge" will be returning to their regular broadcasts after being halted for almost half a year.
