There’s no shortage of babes in superhero movies. So which ones are the hottest?
Whether you’re into Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow (Avengers), Anne Hathaway as Catwoman (The Dark Knight Rises) or Cobie Smulders as SHIELD Agent Maria Hill (Avengers), 2012 has no shortage of hotties in tight superhero outfits. And even before that we’ve been treated to the likes of Jessica Alba as the Invisible Woman (Fantastic Four), Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre (Watchmen), Famke Janssen as Jean Grey and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique (X-Men).
Those us who have been following onscreen superheroes for well before the current wave that began with X-Men in 2000 know that the genre is full of beautiful women. Here’s my list of the hottest women who played superheroines, villains or their love interests of all time.
Diana Rigg as Emma Peel ("The Avengers", 1961). Not to be confused with this summer’s Avengers from Marvel Entertainment, the Avengers were a crimefighting group on British television. Emma Peel may have been the first to popularize the catsuit, now a permanent fixture among super spies and heroes.
Monica Vitti as Modesty Blaise (1966). Modesty Blaise was based on the British comic strip about a sultry former criminal turned adventurer.
Wende Wagner as Lenore Case (“The Green Hornet”, 1966-1967). The personal assistant to Millionaire playboy Britt Reed (aka the Green Hornet), “Miss Case” was the predecessor to Tony Stark’s Pepper Potts.
Julie Newmar as Catwoman ('Batman', 1966-1968). The character may have also been played by Eartha Kitt and Lee Merriwether, but no one else filled a catsuit quite like Julie Newmar.
Joanna Cameron as Isis (“Secrets of Isis”, 1975-1977). Yes, her show may have suffered from poor production values in comparison to other similar programs of the time (see #6) but that didn’t stop me from tuning in to watch Isis in her white mini skirt every week. Wikipedia lists Isis as “the first weekly American live-action television series whose lead character was a female superhero.”
Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman (1975-1979). Batman and Superman have had numerous feature films and TV shows but there has never been a Wonder Woman movie. I can only theorize that this is because no one could ever possibly look as good as Lynda Carter.
Ornella Muti as Princess Aura ("Flash Gordon", 1980). Princess Leia may look good in that slave girl outfit from Return of the Jedi … but she still looks like a boy compared to Princess Aura. So what if she’s the daughter of an intergalactic tyrant and psychopath?
Connie Selecca as Pam Davidson ('Greatest American Hero', 1981-1983). What made this TV series so satisfying wasn’t the idea that a man could wear a bright red costume and gain super powers … it was the idea that a beautiful, intelligent woman could actually be interested in such a complete dork.
Helen Slater as Supergirl (1984). Okay, okay. The movie sucked big time. But she sure was super cute.
Amanda Pays as Tina McGee ('The Flash', 1990-1991). Those eyes, those lips, that accent … she had to be the hottest nerd sidekick ever.
