‘The Thieves’ and ‘The Grand Heist’ continue their fine run at Korean box office

Having set box office records more than a decade ago with ‘My Sassy Girl’, actor Cha Tae Hyun and actress Jun Ji Hyun are once again ruling the box office in 2012 with their respective movies.

According to the latest figures released on the morning of August 22nd, ‘The Thieves’ had 121,312 ticket sales for August 21st and was first on the best seller daily chart. Airing at 580 screens, the movie has now accumulated impressive ticket sales of 11,374,792 thus far.

Starring big names like Lee Jung Jae, Kim Hye Soo, Jun Ji Hyun, Kim Soo Hyun, Kim Yun Suk and Kim Hae Sook, ‘The Thieves’ talks about five professional thieves in Korea who accepts an invitation from their former boss, and links up with 4 Chinese thieves to steal a rare diamond known as the ‘Tears of the Sun’ hidden deep inside a Macau casino.

Meanwhile, Cha Tae Hyun’s movie ‘The Grand Heist’ brought in 109,011 ticket sales on August 21st and ranked second on the best seller daily chart. Airing at 16 screens, the movie has accumulated 3,398,459 ticket sales thus far.

‘The Grand Heist’ is set in the Joseon era where ice is a rare commodity and a symbol of power. A group of common folk band together to steal all the ice stored inside an ice warehouse owned by a nobleman who seeks to enforce exclusive rights to owning ice.

Meanwhile, Hollywood movie ‘Total Recall’ which opened on the same day as ‘The Grand Heist’ brought in ticket sales of 47,630 on August 21st. Another Korean movie ‘R2B: Return to Base’ continues to perform short of expectations as it brought in just 47,246 ticket sales yesterday.
