Veteran actor Kwan Shan passes away

4 Oct – It is a sad time in Hong Kong as veteran actor Kwan Shan, father of Chinese actress Rosamund Kwan Chi-lam, passed away due to lung cancer just last Monday, according to Straits Times. The star was 79.

A former 1960s Hong Kong screen idol, Kwan Shan was known for his dashing good looks and romantic persona in many Shaw Brothers films during the peak of Mandarin films in Hong Kong.

It was said that Rosamund sent a phone text message on Wednesday to relatives and friends to inform them of her father's death, and that his funeral will be held next Thursday at the Hong Kong Funeral Home.

Kwan first debuted in a leading role in "The Story Of Ah Q in 1958", which won him the Best Actor Award at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. He was the first Hong Kong actor to win a Best Actor Award at a European Film Festival. Kwan was also remembered for his role in the Doe Ching classic, "Love Without End" opposite Asia's biggest movie queen then, Linda Lin Dai.

His leading man days were over by the mid 70's, but he continued making sporadic appearances as a supporting actor in films.
