Wanton Wonder: Hua Feng Mian Jia

Wanton Wonder: Hua Feng Mian JiaThe queue at Hua Feng Mian Jia

Wouldn’t you love to have a three-day work week? Well, this wanton noodle stall called “Hua Feng Mian Jia” at Tiong Bahru Food Centre does. They open only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. And each time they do, they see long queues of customers.

Fortunately, the queue moves fairly quickly, and you are soon rewarded with a hearty plate of noodles for your patience.

Wanton Wonder: Hua Feng Mian JiaWanton Noodles may look simple to some, but fans swear by its taste.

Many people are fans of its “QQ” or springy noodles. I asked if they make their own, but they claim it is just ordinary noodles procured from a factory. However, everything else they make themselves – the char siew (unfortunately the lacklustre, red-stained type but at least it’s not too papery dry), the dumplings, the stewed mushrooms and chicken feet.

Wanton Wonder: Hua Feng Mian JiaThe noodles are springy.

The noodles do indeed offer a good bite, but it isn’t quite the same texture as Hong Kong wanton noodles. Also, the springiness doesn’t last long; by the end of the meal, they are plump and softened by the oily gravy and chili mixture.

Wanton Wonder: Hua Feng Mian JiaThe main draw are the wantons.

The highlight here, are the wantons themselves. Along with the S$3 noodles, you get five tasty dumplings with billowy soft skin floating in slurpworthy soup. Each of the meaty dumplings is incredibly savoury, and I almost detect a tinge of salted or dried fish in them. Just like the ones I had in Kuala Lumpur as a child whenever we visited Grandma.

Wanton Wonder: Hua Feng Mian JiaFor fans of chicken feet, check out the Phoenix Claw.

The other thing that’s quite popular here are the “Phoenix Claw” (braised chicken feet) noodles. This is a S$2 portion, and it is pretty much the same size as the S$3 one, noodles-wise! The S$3 probably gets you more toppings (three claws instead of two?). The chicken feet are awesome – really large and well-fried before being braised til tender. It’s little wonder I see people buying entire bowls of chicken feet as a side dish to their wanton noodles.

You’ll have to be an early bird to catch the noodles here. Hua Feng Mian Jia opens from 6am to 2pm, but often sells out by noon. That’s not surprising as so few places these days offer a hearty and satisfying meal for just S$2.

Its the same like in ghim moh, the stall #01-01 Soy milk has caused so many face got rashes and pigmentation on their cheek but yet people there dont know what is happening. Taking something that has side effects and being a victim themselves without knowing anything but just following the queue dumbly. Really pity them. Next time when buying something to eat or drink, notice the people around queuing up to see if they looks healthy or not before joining the queue

This wanton mee stall is really unique in the entire island of Spore.
It opens THREE days a WEEK !!!
Operator must be hell of a loaded that I believe he is just passing his time despite the fact that he has to pay the monthly rent as others who are operating SEVEN days a WEEK !!!
Excellent taste or not is just another gimmick !!!
So far I have never come across any standard food with real aroma that able to give ones a satisfied meal in any hawker centres nor food courts in Spore !!!

The best Wan Ton Mee is the one that we cooks ourself.
Make our own Char Siew that are a bit burned.
Noodle can easily get from anywhere.
Cook your noodle remember to dip in cold water to make it springy.
Make your own sauce, stir well with the noodle.
Eat any amount of Wan Ton, Char Siew up to your heart content.
      Guarantee no MSG.

Yes.... the char siew must be fatty and slightly charred. Don't get that nowadays.

It probably gets its Q from operating 3 days a wk. And more so if it doesnt have any competitor in the same market. The char-siu doesnt look dark and roasted enuff to be aromatic. Will go try it nonetheless to proof its status.

if its lousy, it wouldn't even attract customers by operating once a week!

Good or no good, he will still recommend. On hindsight, good food does not need recommendation. Singaporeans are die-hard when food is concern. Save all your shits.

Should try the one at Amoy street hawker center. Call TAI SENG...a sweet lady runs the stall. Really huge portion and very friendly service.
Most stall buy the noodles from same supplier so the noodles are not a good comparison. rather the soup stock as well as the Char siew and the sauce is important.
