Wendi McLendon-Covey says women can talk about more than just “shoe shopping”.
The American actress starred in the hit comedy film Bridesmaids this year, alongside Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy and Maya Rudolph.
The movie was a box office success and proved the comic capabilities of the cast.
Wendi says women are just as funny as men, and doesn’t know why it takes a film to prove that.
“Women have been funny since women were invented. If the movie goes on to create more opportunities for women then fantastic, but give me a break – it shouldn’t have to,” she chimed in an interview with the UK edition of OK! magazine.
“Women are very interesting creatures, we can talk about more than shoe shopping.”
Wendi is famed for roles on television shows such as Reno 911! and Rules of Engagement.
The 42-year-old star always dreamt of becoming a comedienne.
“Yes, ever since I was a child, but my parents told me not to be stupid and I would not be doing that,” she said.
“They were not supportive at all, I was devastated. For a long while I didn’t have a focus. I didn’t graduate college until I was 30 because I couldn’t nail it down. It wasn’t until I got married that my husband [Greg Covey] said to me: ‘Look, just pursue it if that’s what you want to do- just try it and if it doesn’t work, you tried.’ I tried and it worked!”© Cover Media
