Chinese New Year Goodies: One morsel at a time

If you hadn’t planned to visit the Chinese New Year bazaar at Chinatown, you should think about it again. The street is a colourful spectacle, with the vast array of Chinese New Year goodies and bustling with sellers who boisterously tout their sales in Chinese, Hokkien and English gets one into the festive mood. No wonder the tourists and yuppies, who never knew what this was all about, flock the place. Then there are the serious buyers who trawl through the street, fixed with an intense look, in search of the best bargains. Although the goods may not be the cheapest in town, it boasts the traditional and the newfangled (many from Taiwan). Mostly importantly, you can sample most of them before reaching out for your wallet. Text and Images by Sheere Ng @ Makansutra

    1. 9. Fo Shou, which literally mean "Buddha's palm", is used as an offering for the God of Heaven on the 9th day of Chinese New Year. According to the seller, people rarely eat this, although it makes a pretty good preserved fruit after marinating with salt and sugar.
