[UPDATE on 3 July: Adding hawkers chosen to represent Singapore]

The results of the voting contest for a celebrity cook-off against Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay are out.

Mr Ang Kiam Meng from Jumbo Seafood, Mdm Foo Kui Lian from Tian Tian Chicken Rice, and Mr Ryan Koh from 328 Katong Laksa were chosen as the most popular hawkers.

The eight days of voting saw over 2.5 million votes cast.

On 5 and 6 July, Gordon Ramsay will spend time learning how to cook the three dishes. The contest will take place on 7 July, at Newton Food Centre.

The non-ticketed event is open to the public. A thousand servings of food will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Earlier, Ramsay had accepted a challenge by local food bloggers to face off against Singapore's top three hawkers in a culinary showdown.

The world-renowned chef sent his response in a YouTube clip, voicing his doubts that Singapore food is as good as Singaporeans say it is.

"The people of Singapore want to put their favourite hawker food to a Michelin star test... many of them think that hawker food is deserving of more recognition," he is seen saying, speaking from the inside of a kitchen.

"Frankly, I'm not an expert on Singapore food; I'm not sure if it's as good as Singaporeans actually say it is... I've got to see this for myself, and see what they have to offer. One thing I'm certain of is that people will like my version better!"

Singaporeans (this means you!) will get to select the three hawkers who will take him on, out of a list of 12 that has been identified, after having consistently higher food ratings and recommendations on local food portal HungryGoWhere.

Starting Tuesday, 25 June at 8am, an online vote for the top three will take place until the end of 2 July. The chosen three will be revealed the next day.

Previously, a group of Singapore food bloggers, including Leslie Tay from iEatiShootiPost and Daniel Ang from Daniel’s Food Diary, and local telecommunications giant SingTel formally challenged British chef Gordon Ramsay to take on Singapore’s most beloved hawkers in a culinary contest.

Ramsay will pit his skills against three popular hawkers who will be selected through a public poll hosted on the HungryGoWhere website.

Chef Ramsay is the owner of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in London and he is also known for presenting competitive cooking reality television shows, including Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef.

The contest will determine if Singapore’s hawker fare can match up to the standards of the prestigious Michelin guide, which has become the benchmark for culinary excellence around the world.

The challenge is also in response to recent concerns of a decline in local hawker culture and whether international recognition, such as Michelin-starred accreditation, would encourage fresh talent to join the trade and preserve Singapore’s hawker heritage.
